The waste problem in window display design


A window display stays up for an average of six to eight weeks. Then, it is dismantled. MDF panels, lacquered surfaces, and vinyl prints are mostly non-recyclable because they are made of multi-material structures. In practice, it is impossible to recycle painted MDF.

This situation creates three problems.

Cost. Production from scratch every season and the budget for disposal after dismantling.

ESG reporting. Waste metrics have become an indicator that must be reported annually.

Brand image. Customers are now asking what happens to a brand's window display after it is taken down, especially when the brand promotes sustainability.

How to achieve sustainable window display design


There are three main ways to make a window display sustainable.

Establishing a modular system. Designing display elements in pieces to be reused from season to season. The same panels can be transformed into different displays through various compositions.

Using single-material components. Multi-material construction kills recyclability. A mono-material surface can be recycled at the end of its life without the need for separation.

Establish a buy-back agreement. If the manufacturer takes back and repurposes the material at the end of the season, waste is removed from the cycle.

Studio Blai's retail projects

Mercado Design Days project reinterpreted 500 kg of plastic as event architecture. After the event concluded, the panels returned to the studio and were set aside for use in new projects.

Vakkorama Akmerkez WWF Stands project formed the physical architecture of a sustainability campaign conducted in collaboration with WWF. The material was consistent with the message.

Sürdür Store Window Display project utilized 125 kg of plastic for a small-scale boutique window display.

Yes. Studio Blai buy-back agreements are structured as part of retail projects. After dismantling, the panels are returned to the studio, melted down, and transformed into new panels.

Can the amount of plastic recycled in a window display project be documented?


Yes. Based on the number of panels used in each project, we calculate the amount of plastic recycled, energy saved, and CO₂ emissions reduced. This report can be used in the brand's sustainability communications.

Are bulk orders available for store-wide projects?

B.What plastic is it made from?

Opaque panels are produced using recycled HDPE, while translucent panels are produced using recycled LDPE.

C.Is it 100% recycled?

Yes. Blai Panel is produced entirely from recycled plastic waste.

D.Are the panels different from each other?

Colors are consistent, but because the production process relies on manual mixing, the pattern distribution of each panel is unique. The panels share the same character, but an exact pattern repetition does not occur.

E.Does the surface change over time?

Deformation is not expected under normal conditions of use. With long-term UV exposure, slight color fading may occur over the years.

F.Does the material scratch?

Like all surface materials, it can be scratched; however, minor surface marks can be reduced with heat application.

G.Water and chemical resistance

Yes. The material is completely waterproof and is not affected by moisture. Due to its high chemical resistance, it is unaffected by most chemicals and paints, and it is stain-resistant.

H.Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. HDPE is naturally UV-resistant. It can be used for many years; slight color fading may occur over time, but structural degradation is not expected. Enhanced UV resistance can be provided for special projects.

Is it resistant to UV light?

Yes. Thanks to its HDPE-based structure, it has high UV resistance.

Is it suitable for human contact?

Blai Panel has been tested under the EN 71-3 Toy Safety Standard and has successfully passed all migration tests. No migration of harmful substances has been observed.

Material Thickness

Material thickness may vary by +/- 1mm across the surface.

What is its heat resistance?

It is suitable for continuous use at temperatures up to approximately 80°C. It can withstand levels of 110–120°C during short-term exposure.

Are products in stock or made-to-order?

All Blai products are made-to-order.

What is the production lead time?

For panel orders:
Up to 10 panels → approximately 1 week
10–50 panels → approximately 2 weeks
Larger orders → planned on a project basis

Why is a sample set recommended?

A sample set is recommended to evaluate color, texture, and surface character before starting a project.

Can I place a custom order?

Yes. Custom blends of existing colors can be produced with a minimum of 10 panels. Creating entirely new colors requires a minimum order of 75 panels. Sample production is charged separately. Additionally, Studio Blai offers project consultancy, custom design development, and application production services.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

There is no minimum order for standard products. Minimum quantities apply to custom-produced panels.

Can custom-sized panels be produced?

The standard panel size is 122 × 122 cm. Custom cutting and application solutions can be provided depending on the project.

3-SHIPPING AND DELIVERY

a.Is international shipping available?

We ship throughout Turkey. Please contact us for shipments to Europe and other countries.

B.What is the shipping time?

Domestic deliveries within Turkey are generally made within 1 week after production is completed. For shipments to Europe, lead times are determined on a project basis.

C.How are the products packaged?

Products are flat-packed to ensure safe transport.

D.What should I do if the delivery is damaged?

If damage is noticed during delivery, a damage report must be filed with the courier, and you should contact us.

Yes. Most products are shipped flat-packed.

Yes. Most products are shipped flat-packed.

C.How is it cleaned?

Blai Panel is stain-resistant. Soapy water and standard cleaning products can be used safely. Most cleaning agents are suitable. The material has high chemical resistance.

D.Can the surface be repaired?

Minor scratches can be removed with controlled heat application. Deeper marks can be sanded out.

Blai Panel aims to extend the material cycle by transforming waste plastics into long-lasting design products. All products are manufactured using 100% waste plastic, without the use of any binders, surface coatings, or similar additives.

Yes. It is fully recyclable at the end of its life cycle.

C. What is the carbon impact?
